SPRING CLASSIC 2011 TO RAISE MONEY FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAMS

Spring Classic Vol. 1
Spring Classic Vol. 2
If you watched Macklemore’s rousing performance at the Mariners’ opening day game, you may recall seeing members of Garfield High School’s drumline proudly backing the local rapper. School music programs need funding now more than ever, and the Spring Classic 2011 performances seek to benefit the drumline programs at Garfield High School, Washington Middle School, and Madrona K-8. On Saturday, April 30, you can catch Spring Classic Vol. 1 at the Crocodile with Big World Breaks featuring Black Stax, Xperience, Hi-Life Sound System, and DJ Miguel Rockwell. Spring Classic Vol. 2 will be held at the Vera Project with Big World Breaks featuring Massive Monkees, JusMoni, Turtle T, Vicious Puppies, Bulldog Horns, and the Garfield High School Drumline. Both performances will be hosted by Jerm of Helladope. Credit goes to One Family Inc., Reign City and The Town Entertainment for putting together the shows. NOISE FOR THE NEEDY 2011 TO BENEFIT REAL CHANGE

Noise for the Needy
From June 7-12 you can support Real Change with one simple act: going to see a concert. This year’s Noise for the Needy (NFTN) music festival is spotlighting the newspaper aimed at empowering homeless individuals. Since 2004, NFTN has helped raise more than $100,000 for local non-profit organizations. Past beneficiaries include Teen Feed, New Beginnings, Urban Rest Stop, and Parent Trust of Washington. A variety of venues all over the city will host 21 shows over six days. Highlights include a dance party at Belltown’s Underground Events Center with Soft Metals, Ononos, and eight other bands, as well as an all-ages show at the Vera Project with Ramona Falls and Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. For those wanting a more interactive experience, The Crescent Lounge will host Karaoke for the Needy on June 8 and donate a portion of the bar sales to NFTN. Tickets for all NFTN shows will go on sale the week of May 2. Interested in helping out? Visit the NFTN volunteer page for more information on how to get involved.

VERA PROJECT HOSTS COLLEGE BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2011

College Battle of the Bands
On Thursday, April 21, the Vera Project will play host to the Seattle leg of the 3rd Annual College Battle of the Bands. A total of 11 cities are participating in this musical competition, which is presented by Chegg.com, GRAMMY U, AT&T and SESAC.  Like an older sibling to EMP’s wildly successful Sound Off! competition, 10 bands from around the Northwest are vying for three coveted spots on Thursday night’s bill. Genres range from the Top 40-inspired party hip-hop of Seattle University band U Crew to the edgy and infectious rock of University of Washington band (and Sound on the Sound favorite) Land of Pines. The artist with the most plays on the College Battle of the Bands’ Seattle website gets a guaranteed spot at the Vera Project show; the other two slots will be filled by judge selections. Winners will be showered with music gear and prizes from contest sponsors, in addition to securing an opening spot on Live Nation’s upcoming Textbooks & Tickets Tour. Bands that submit songs with a social justice theme are also eligible for a $5,000 grant furnished by the Elfenworks Foundation. Notable alumni of the College Battle of the Bands contest include Los Angeles indie rockers Local Natives and North Carolina-bred hip-hop artist Mike Posner. Keep an eye on the Vera Project’s website for tickets to what promises to be an awesome showcase of young talent. For a taste of what the evening will be like, the promo video below is a worthy introduction to Flula Borg, the event’s animated host.
