Congratulations to Reel Grrls progeny Naomi Nelson! The local youth filmmaker has just been awarded the People’s Choice Award from POV’s “This is My Family” competition for her documentary short, Why Not. The competition is part of PBS’ “Adoption Stories” public awareness campaign, launched to examine the issues adoptees and families who choose to adopt face. Naomi’s film, described by POV as “personal story about one young woman’s experience in foster care and how she beat the odds to end up at a four year university,” garnered the most online votes in the short video competition. “This is the real thing,” said one competition juror of Naomi’s work. “She is a great character in the midst of transformation and you can’t ask for anything more.” See for yourself below!
