LANGSTON HUGHES AFRICAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL CONTINUES THIS WEEK

LHAAFF
The 8th annual Langston Hughes African American Film Festival kicked off this past weekend and will run through Sunday, May 8. The films screened so far have done well, with last night’s showing of local film 23rd and Union selling out (an additional screening has been added on Wednesday, May 4 at 9 pm). You can catch all the films at Central Cinema with the exception of the closing day schedule, which will screen at Garfield High Schools’ Quincy Jones Theater. Make sure to see some of the great films at LHAAFF this week while you can. Highlights include the Seattle soul documentary Wheedle’s Groove, a brunch event with filmmakers at the Northwest African American Museum, and the closing night film Butterfly Rising (directed by True Blood actress Tanya Wright). SEATTLE PARTIES WITH “OSCAR” THIS WEEKEND

Hollywood’s biggest night is almost upon us and Seattle is rolling out the red carpet! In celebration of the 83rd annual Academy Awards, our fair city is hosting a slew of Oscar-themed viewing parties this Sunday: As mentioned before, the Washington Filmworks is hosting its third annual Oscar viewing party and benefit for local film at Spitfire in Belltown; Central Cinema will show a live feed of the Academy Awards telecast complete with Oscar trivia and “luscious” food and drink specials; Wallingford will become “Wallywood” for Fifth Avenue NW Film’s Stu Goldman Party in the Mambo Room at Babalu; and there are still tickets available for Three Dollar Bill Cinema and the Gay City Health Project’s “Glitzy Date with Oscar” Gala at the Cinerama. In an amazing show of “Seattle solidarity,” local indie movie houses Central Cinema, the city’s only dine-in theater, and The Grand Illusion, Seattle’s oldest continuously running theater, will soon begin screening the trailer for “$5 Cover: Seattle” as part of their preview reels. Women in Film
Women in Film-Seattle is an internationally connected professional organization of women working in film, television, video and new media dedicated to supporting and building not only the careers of its members, but the industry at large. Every first Tuesday of the month, find out what’s happening at WIF. Network, share stories of your most recent gig, bring a DVD to show off either a work in progress or finished video/film, have a glass of wine and snacks and donate to the WIF kitty. This month they will be meeting tonight, September 7 at Central Cinema in the Central District at 7:00 pm.
