At the beginning of this month, Mayor McGinn proclaimed February “Seattle Women Who Rock Month,” recognizing the work of the female musicians who were such a large part of the Seattle grunge music scene. The Mayor’s proclamation recognized that these women have been overshadowed by male-dominated bands and music retrospectives, in addition to their role in making Seattle’s music a part of a cultural phenomenon.

The proclamation came on the heels of the release of “These Streets,” a theatrical play and history project centered around women in the grunge era. These Streets runs at ACT Theatre through March 10, and tickets can be found here.

A blog post from KEXP takes a look at the Seattle women who contributed to Seattle’s music scene in the 1980’s and 1990’s including Goodness, The Gits, Fastbacks, 7 Year Bitch, and Bikini Kill.

KEXP also has posted a big collection of videos from women who rock, check them out!

Happy Women Who Rock Month, Seattle!

NPR music experts recently published their top five “Must-Hear” artists of 2011. Local Seattle band Pickwick made the list. NPR says that the band’s “insidious, slinky jams worm their way into your brain and plant their unshakeable melodies and groove.”  Other honorable mentions include popular local groups like Fleet Foxes and Shabazz Palaces, among the likes of international sensations such as Bon Iver, Wilco and Raphael Saadiq.

NPR Music
Longtime music writer and KEXP DJ Hannah Levine helped NPR Music compile an extensive list of bands from the Pacific Northwest that favor heavier, doom-laden sounds. The result is a compelling audio mix of songs that highlights a burgeoning music scene. Bands like Absolute Monarchs, Lesbian, Black Breath, He Whose Ox is Gored, Red Fang and more are at the forefront of a heavy metal revival. There are also nods to founding fathers of the moevement (like the Melvins and Sleep) as well as recent notable acts (such as These Arms Are Snakes, Akimbo, and Triumph of Lethargy). It’s a thoughtful primer to the darker side of rock in the Northwest.
