SPRING CLASSIC 2011 TO RAISE MONEY FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAMS

Spring Classic Vol. 1
Spring Classic Vol. 2
If you watched Macklemore’s rousing performance at the Mariners’ opening day game, you may recall seeing members of Garfield High School’s drumline proudly backing the local rapper. School music programs need funding now more than ever, and the Spring Classic 2011 performances seek to benefit the drumline programs at Garfield High School, Washington Middle School, and Madrona K-8. On Saturday, April 30, you can catch Spring Classic Vol. 1 at the Crocodile with Big World Breaks featuring Black Stax, Xperience, Hi-Life Sound System, and DJ Miguel Rockwell. Spring Classic Vol. 2 will be held at the Vera Project with Big World Breaks featuring Massive Monkees, JusMoni, Turtle T, Vicious Puppies, Bulldog Horns, and the Garfield High School Drumline. Both performances will be hosted by Jerm of Helladope. Credit goes to One Family Inc., Reign City and The Town Entertainment for putting together the shows. MASSIVE MONKEES EXIT “AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW”

Seattle Times
Massive Monkees showed “massive heart” on Sunday night’s episode of “America’s Best Dance Crew,” according to emcee Mario Lopez. But it wasn’t enough to convince the judges to send the Seattle break dancers to the finals of the MTV competition. The Monkees were bested by the all-female troupe from Los Angeles, We Are Heroes, in Sunday night’s round. Making a gracious exit, dancer JD Rainey said, “Thank you, America,” before departing the stage, arm in arm with his fellow Monkees: Brysen Angeles, Jerome Aparis, Marcus Garrison, Timothy Soriano and Samnith Ly.

Seattle’s The Massive Monkees continue to be in top form on “America’s Best Dance Crew,” the MTV show that challenges a diverse collection of dancers to deliver high-intensity choreography around a theme each week. There are two opportunities to attend “viewing parties”: one is an all-ages/family-friendly party at The Filipino Community Center(5740 Martin Luther King Jr. Way) that starts at 7 PM, and the other is a 21+, sports-bar style party at The War Room starting at 7:30 PM. Both are free, and Massive Monkees-affiliated DJs will be spinning at each.

America’s Best Dance Crew, airing on MTV on Sunday nights, is the dance battle equivalent of American Idol, wherein a group of teams are tasked a challenge and compete each week to win a majority of audience votes via text message while being subjected to the feather-lashing critique of celebrity judges. Despite the glitzy production, the show features exciting and innovative dance collectives and this season’s groups appear to be the best yet, particularly because Seattle’s own internationally-acclaimed Massive Monkees are competing. Last Friday, Hollis Wong-Wear at the Seattle Weekly chatted with Jerome Aparis and Bryson Angeles of Massive Monkees on a conference call and asked them about the hula-hoop challenge and more about their experience performing on the show. Seattle Weeklymassive monkees
Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew, Season 4, premiered last night on MTV, featuring nine dance crews from across the country including Seattle’s very own Massive Monkees. For those who are unfamiliar, the show operates with the same basic premise of Randy Jackson’s other side project, American Idol. It’s extremely exciting to see Massive Monkees featured as one of the nine crews on a show with such broad national exposure as they are such an important, if unsung, establishment in Seattle’s hip-hop culture. Locally, their crew includes a vibrant and active collective of dancers and musicians– One Be Lo, DJ DV-ONE and DJ BlesOne are some such members–and internationally, Massive Monkees have garnered numerous accolades, including winning the World BBoy Championships in 2004 against Supercrew (the group that was named America’s Best Dance Crew back in Season 2.)
