Starbucks typically offers free music downloads each week, highlighting a diverse selection of artists. But this week, iPhone users will be happy to discover they can get a free download of the Shazam Encore app (normally priced at $5.99). For those unfamiliar, Shazam is a handy music identification tool that listens to a sample of a tune and gives you the title and artist. Look for a coupon at your nearest Starbucks to get in on this sweet deal.

TICKETS GOING FAST FOR STARBUCK’S “HOT JAVA COOL JAZZ” EVENT

Edmond’s Beacon
Get em’ quick while they’re (extra) hot! Tickets are going FAST for Starbucks 16th Annual Hot Java Cool Jazz concert, which will bring some of the region’s top young musicians together for a spectacular show at the Paramount Theatre next Friday, April 15, at 7:00 pm. Box office proceeds from the show will benefit the music programs of the high schools participating in the event, which this year include Edmonds-Woodway, Garfield, Mountlake Terrace, Newport and Roosevelt. Since 1995, the Starbucks Hot Java Cool Jazz program has helped raise more than $200,000 for Seattle high schools’ music and jazz programs, helping to cover the costs of band competitions, equipment and travel, in the face of widespread budget cuts for arts education. “We want to help ensure that Seattle continues to be as known for our music scene as we are for our coffee,” says Starbucks regional VP Kris Engskov. Last year’s event sold out, so jazz fans are encouraged to buy tickets in advance at the Paramount Theatre box office, online or surcharge-free at select Starbucks stores. For more information on the show, participating bands and other upcoming Starbucks events in Seattle visit the link above.

New York Times
Last weekend, The New York Times sat down with Seattleite and man behind the music of Starbucks, Timothy Jones. He is the former manager of Seattle’s Urban Renewal Records and moved to Starbucks in 1987 when there were only 7 locations in the world. Jones and his team are essentially the DJs for the millions of Starbucks around the world, creating varied playlists to suit the needs of the coffeehouses’ customers. Implementing what he calls a “coffeehouse filter,” Jones picks songs and artists that match the vibe of each location. From blues to jazz to reggae and new artists, Starbucks playlists feature thousands of atmosphere-enhancing tunes. To prove his ability to cater to time of day and season, Jones offers his soundtrack for an autumn Sunday, which includes the Fleet Foxes’ “White Winter Hymnal.” To read the full article, follow the link above.

Pitchfork:
On January 30, Starbucks Entertainment will release Sweetheart: Our Favorite Artists Sing Their Favorite Love Songs. Starbucks already pulled this trick in 2005, and apparently the world demanded a sequel. The tracklist includes Seattle musicians Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Bridwell, and Kate Tucker covering songs by The Cure, George Harrison, and Bruce Springsteen.
