Seattle Office of Film + Music

Sound Off! is the Northwest’s foremost underage battle of the bands event. Each year EMP is electrified by this annual musical event that provides a stage and spotlight for promising young bands in the Seattle area. Those interested in participating can submit an application starting September 2. Sound Off! has been the launching ground for various artists and bands including The Lonely Forest, Dyme Def, Sol, New Faces, The Lonely H, Schoolyard Heroes and Brite Futures (Formerly Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head). Last year’s winner was pop-centric group Tomten. Participants must be 21 or under, and live in Washington, Oregon or British Columbia. EMP will also have a booth in Center Square during Bumbershoot this weekend with more information about next year’s Sound Off!

EMP Soundoff!
Saturday night the EMP Skychurch was alive and hopping with local young talent and an energetic crowd, hyped up for the 2011 Soundoff! battle of the bands final round. After three weeks of musical combat the battle had been waned down to four underage bands whose musical prowess greatly overshadowed their young faces and novice driving abilities. Seattle baroque pop band Tomten took home the grand prize after a solid competition that rocked its way past the curfews of band members and attendees alike. Simply making it the final round was a major feat and all the bands put on a superb show, while looking amazing against the massive Skychurch visualizer screen. Congratulations to Northern Departure and their bluegrass brilliance, faux-hawked Fit For Hounds and the British Columbia representatives The Oh Wells on their awesome performances. Be sure to keep an eye out for Soundoff! victors Tomten and catch them at their newly won Bumbershoot performance this summer. Check out the link above for all the battle of the bands results and to see who got all the spoils.

The battle of the bands wages on in EMP’s 10th annual “Sound Off!” as the remaining semi-finalists meet this Saturday, March 5, for one last showdown. The final four– Fit for Hounds, Northern Departure, The Oh Wells and wildcard pick Tomten– will hit the Sky Church stage at 7:30 in an all-ages concert to determine this year’s “Sound Off!” champion. For the past 10 years, “Sound Off!” has emerged as the Northwest’s largest battle of the bands for musicians 21 and under, while also giving giving young artists from all different backgrounds a once in a lifetime opportunity to come together and play their original music. Past competitions have brought rising local bands like The Lonely Forest, New Faces, and The Globes to wider attention in the Seattle music scene. For more on the finals show, check out the link.
